Welcome to the online portal of
Tobias Pöhling, maker of double basses and guitars
A few words about me
In 1993 I made my first guitar, a semi-acoustic bass guitar, from materials that you'll be looking for in vain on my instruments today: plywood and filler.
Afer a few more attempts, which have been disposed of for reasons of public health, in 1994 I started the guitar making course at the Newark and Sherwood College, UK, with Roy Courtnall.
This was followed by a three year course in violin making at the Newark School of Violinmaking. During this time I learned the secrets of violin making as well as repair and restoratin techniques.
After completing this course as well, I gained experience, mainly in the field of repair and restoration, first in Melbourne, Australia, and then for four years in London at Bridgewood & Neitzert. Here I very quickly specalised in repairs and restoration of double basses.
In 2004 I moved back to Germany and opened my own workshop for double basses and archtop guitars. In August 2005 I moved into bigger premesis where I now undertake repairs on all stringed instruments as well as making new double basses and guitars.
On the following pages you will get a little impression of my work. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you like to find out more. I will also try and keep this page as up to date as possible, so call in again.
